Stars and Stripes "Heroes" Salutes Military Bravery and Dedication
On Thursday June 4, 2009, 11:44 am EDT

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent daily news source for the U.S. military, will publish its fifth annual “Heroes” supplement on June 14th (Flag Day) to honor the many soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have been recognized for valor in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This special section pays tribute to the warfighter,” said Pat Dickson, Washington bureau editor. “In it, people can read of the deeds that earned medals of valor—and learn about the men and women responsible for them. The servicemembers included in this edition stand as surrogates for the thousands of others so recognized. Stars and Stripes has focused on the highest honors given for valor in a war zone, irrespective of rank. It is up to us to remember the deeds of those who have been in the arena, faces covered in dust and sweat and blood, while we go about our daily lives.”

Stars and Stripes Publisher Max D. Lederer Jr., said, “This is the fifth year that Stars and Stripes has published ‘Heroes,’ its annual tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the men and women of the Armed Forces. ‘Heroes’ tells the stories of those who have received recognition for actions deemed extraordinary in relation to the everyday courage exhibited by service men and women serving in harm’s way. Americans are the envy of people all over the world for the freedoms that we have come to expect as an integral part of our culture. The open society in which Americans live and work is possible because of the sacrifices of the Armed Forces. It is the role of Stars and Stripes to tell the story daily of the men and women who put their lives on the line for all of America. ‘Heroes’ is our way to give a special salute each year to the honor and dedication of our military men and women.”

“Heroes” will be published in the European, Pacific and Middle East editions of Stars and Stripes beginning June 14 and distributed subsequently in the nation’s capital, in several U.S. military base newspapers, and to Dept. of Defense schools located overseas and in the United States. Total distribution will exceed 1.6 million copies, nearly twice the number distributed of the 2008 edition. Delivery to key outlets in the nation’s capital will include Capitol Hill, where House and Senate members will receive a number of hand-delivered copies; along the K Street “power corridor” and business community, and in The Washington Post.

Following its publication in print, an enhanced version of “Heroes” will be available online at the Stars and Stripes website, www.stripes.com.
