CHICAGO — A Cook County judge has handed down an 85-year prison sentence to a reputed gang member convicted of fatally shooting a former Marine who had served two tours in Iraq.
In passing sentence Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Bertina Lampkin called 24-year-old Steven Bryant a coward and accused him of having what she called “a malignant heart.”
Prosecutors said the victim, 23-year-old Ricardo “Ricky” Martinez Jr., had recently completed service in the Marines and had ambitions of becoming a Chicago police officer.
They said Martinez had attended a Cubs game at Wrigley Field in April of 2006 when Bryant reportedly mistook a friend of Martinez’s for a rival gang member and fired multiple gunshots, hitting Martinez.
Martinez died five days after the shooting.
