Bowdoin Graduates Sworn in as Marine Corps Officers

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College alumni take many different career paths after graduation. Roommates Jack Dingess and Pack Janes will certainly pursue the road less traveled. Before over 100 family members, friends and former teammates, Dingess and Janes, both Polar Bear student-athletes, were sworn in as Marine Corps officers in a ceremony just hours after commencement on May 23.
Dingess graduated with a degree in History and a minor in Government and Legal Studies. Janes earned his degree in Government and Legal Studies. The pair spent the summers after their first and junior years at the Marines' Officer Candidate School. They will now head to their next round of training at The Basic School (TBS).
"Jack was a good football player, a great team captain and a man of outstanding character," according to head football coach Dave Caputi. "He received the gift of leadership, refined by his parents and his marine officer training, and some very good professors at Bowdoin. What impressed our staff the most was his daily work ethic and the consistency of his efforts in everything he attempted."
"Pack was a phenomenal leader for our young players this season," recalls head men's lacrosse coach Tom McCabe. "He always set he tone on how to practice with enthusiasm and intensity. He was awarded the Paul Tiemer Trophy that goes to the player judged to have shown the greatest improvement and team spirit over the course of the season. Pack was an exceptional teammate and leader for the lacrosse team."
A growing number of Bowdoin football alums have pursued the military as a career. One recent graduate, Brendan Murphy '07 (a 2006 football captain), also accepted a commission upon graduation and just recently shipped off to Afghanistan. Classmate Dave Donahue (also a 2007 men's lacrosse captain) just completed TBS.
