I am going to Marine Corps Barracks 8th and I's Evening Parade next week. The Marines in the ceremony, even non-rates, all wear "Dress Whites". I have been before in civilian attire and noticed that other Marines also wear "Dress Whites" that are watching the show. I know normally Dress Whites are reserved for officers and SNCOs only unless part of an official ceremony. My question is As a Corporal attending the Evening Parade, can I wear Dress Whites?

Corporal, here is what I know.
White trousers are the uniform for the parade season. In the fall, they will change back to blue trousers for the winter. If you saw a Marine in white trousers they were stationed there. They are out and about before each evening parade doing escort duty and the like.
Enjoy the parade.. its inspiring.

I know when I was stationed there we were in civies. I know in 15 years things have changed. I can say this the friday night parades are very enjoyable and I recomend everyone making it to at least one of them in their life.

There is no such thing as "Dress Whites." Officer's used to have an all white uniform (sometimes called Dress Whites) similar to that of Navy officers, but that was done away with in the late 1990s.

I think you mean "Blue-White" A/Bs. As I recall, you cannot wear the Blue-White or Blue Dress "A" uniform while on leave or liberty. You can wear the Blue Dress "B" uniform (ribbons & badges). As for the Blue-White "B" it was not an authorized uniform for leave or liberty when I was in. A few years ago, I understand I became authorized for wear by SNCOs and Officers during the summer months. I recommend you consult your "Guidebook for Marines" or better yet, the current edition of MCO P1020.34_.

For some reason .mil websites bomb out when I try to open them. I'm curious what it says? I attended one and it was blue bravos with blue trousers and blood stripe. I don't think white trousers were an option for guests. What is perplexing is I recently attended a ceremony and bumped into a friend of mine (GySgt active duty) Wearing blues with white trousers. He was there on a PME and was not part of the ceremony. I didn't even think to ask how all that worked. All the Marines from Paris were wearing blue bravos with blue trousers. Saw two generals not wearing the sam brown belt. I thought that was a question I need to find an answer to as well.

Boil it all down .... your safe bet is to wear blue bravos with ribbons and badges.

Since when has the Blue Dress "B" uniform not been authorized for leave and liberty?

This link at the same URL indicates Blue-White "B" is authorized for leave and liberty, but does not mention whether Blue Dress 'B"s are. http://www.marcorsyscom.usmc.mil/sites/mcub/library/MCUR/URCH2.htm#UR2005

I just looked this up in the Pubs section of usmc.mil and the chart posted above is NOT correct. The current order is MCO P1020.34G. The link is: http://www.marines.mil/news/publications/Documents/MCO%20P1020.34G%20W%20CH%201-5.pdf

Table 2-1 indicates that both Blue Dress "B" and Blue-White Dress "B" are authorized for leave and liberty. I recommend you read chapter 2 of this pub in order to ensure Blue-White "B" is authorized for wear by NCOs.

After reviewing paragraph 2003.1 of the above reference, it appears that only officers and SNCOs are authorized to wear Blue-White Dress uniforms. I think the NCOs and junior Marines at MB Washington are permitted to wear them as part of an "organizational property" issue while performing duties at the barracks.

Can any active duty SNCOs please verify?

I can verify that. those units are like the silent drill team who during summer months regardless of rank wear white trousers.

but the Dress whites went the way of the Dodo so when they came out with the blue/whites as the only thing I believe that is when it was extended to SNCOs... 'course my history on it is falible I know currently NCOs are not authorized to wear it.

SNCOs can wear it to a summer unit function unless uniformity is required (change of command or something along those kinds of things)... A uniform inspection is fine to mix and match as an example.

I'm rambling...

That's good info SSgt. So an NCO cannot wear Blue-Whites unless they are a prescribed uniform for a ceremony in which case the white trousers are issued as "organizational property."

Another item of "organizational property" worn for duty at Marine Barracks Washington are the Blue wool overcoats. They are identical to the old green overcoats (horse blankets) except they are made out of navy blue wool with scarlet piping and gold anodized buttons.

this is correct, they wore them at the inauguration if anyone noticed. I think the presidents own, silent drill team and other Washington posted staff rate that.... not sure about MSG in cold areas though... that's a good question right there.

anyone got that gouge?

While I was The Oldest Post of the Corps we were the only ones that rated wearing the blue overcoat.

I just spent 20 days PTAD at MBW, and the only guests I saw in Dress Blue/Whites were officers. Even visiting SNCO's were usually in service Chucks. I'm pretty sure the only reason junior enlisted and NCO's at 8th and I are allowed to wear the white trousers is because of a special exception for being stationed there, and doesn't apply to people visiting. Not to mention that I'm pretty sure it is a variation of the Dress Blue Alphas, which are not allowed for leave/liberty. Safe bet: go in chucks, especially with how warm its been here.

recruiter SNCOs from my RS are required, when going to a Marines Graduation, to wear the blue/whites during the summer months... not all of them have them as many get promoted while on the duty.

(all of this is what my recruiter told me)

Just a thought... why not blue deltas?

Petz

that's probably what he meant just forgot the short sleeves are deltas .... unless he just wants to wear green slacks.
