Memorial Day turned into a proud and unique occasion for married Marines Darren and Rachael Beatty, serving in Iraq.

Darren, from Quincy, and his wife, Rachael, who comes from a small town in Washington, celebrated a synchronicity of wonderful and uncommon events May 25, when each was promoted to the same rank (first lieutenant), on the same day, at the same time at the Alasad Marine Base near Iraq.

“I’m very proud of both Darren and Rachel,” said father Mike Beatty, of Quincy. “They are very special people with common goals and beliefs.”

The couple met in 2003 at UC Berkeley while enrolled in an ROTC program. Each went on to earn a degree in political science. The two were commissioned as second lieutenants in the Marines in 2007.

Darren and Rachel married the same year, and were then stationed in North Carolina, where they bought a home in 2008.

Deployed to Iraq in 2009, they are expected to return home in early 2010.

“We all support what they are doing because they truly believe what they are doing is right,” said Mike Beatty. “We wish them all the best and pray they remain safe and return home when they finish their mission.”
