Two area retired Marine colonels have received writing awards from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

Col. William Powers of Spotsylvania County received the 2009 Gen. Roy S. Geiger Award for his article "Our Last Manned Strike Aircraft?" in the May 2008 issue of Marine Corps Gazette magazine.

The article examines the evolution and use of unmanned combat aerial vehicles.

Geiger, for whom the award is named, was one of only five naval aviators who commanded both air and ground units during World War II. The award is given to the author of the best article published during the preceding year in Marine Corps Gazette in the field of Marine Corps aviation.

Col. Dick Camp of Fredericksburg received the Col. Robert Debs Heinl Jr. Award for his article "Talking With the Enemy," published in Leatherneck magazine in October 2008.

The article is about Marine Maj. Harry Pratt, chief interpreter during the post-World War II trial of Gen. Tomoyuki Yama****a, commander of the Imperial Japanese 14th Army, in Manila.

The award is given in memory of Heinl, a distinguished Marine Corps officer, journalist and historian. He was a founder of the Heritage Foundation and author of "Soldiers of the Sea." The award is given to the author of the best article pertinent to Marine Corps history published in a newspaper, magazine, journal or other periodical during the preceding year.

Camp works with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

The foundation supports historical programs of the Marine Corps and oversaw the planning and construction of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Heritage Center.
