Young Marine earns $150,000 scholarship

NORTH BRANCH — Y/M 1st Sgt. Havermale has been awarded a four-year $150,000 scholarship for college from the United States Marine Corps. U.S.M.C. Capt. Vanderwater presented the award on May 21 at North Branch High School where Havermale is a member of the National Honor Society.

Havermale joined the Young Marines program in April 2003 and was the Honor Graduate of his recruit class. During his time in the Young Marines program he has been awarded 43 ribbons, many with bronze and silver stars. He has also received the Gold Presidential Service Award for his many hours of community service work, accumulating more than 850 hours.

He was honored at the Pentagon in 2003 for being the National Winner in the first Young Marines Drug Demand Reduction Poster Contest. He has served on a Color Guard at the Pentagon in 2006 for the Red Ribbon Celebrations and he was the Honor Graduate of the Young Marines Michigan Regiment’s 2008 Senior Leadership School.

In May of 2008, Havermale was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant and later earned the rank of 1st Sergeant in the Eastern Michigan Young Marines Unit. During his college he will be attending the Marine Corps Officer Training School in Quantico, Va., and will be commissioned at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and serve in the Unites States Marine Corps for the next eight years.

While serving in the Young Marines program, “Havermale has learned the true meaning of the Young Marines’ values of Discipline, Teamwork, and Leadership and has been a good friend and an inspiration to many of the youth. His actions and his efforts while in the program, have most definitely strengthened the lives of America’s youth,” said a statement from the Young Marines.

“We wish him well on his endeavor and a successful future as a proud officer in the United States Marine Corps. He most definitely will be deeply missed by everyone in the unit. May God always be with him.” the statement concluded.
