Hi, I want to join the Marines but I owe $20k in student loans. For does of you who have serve or are still serving in the Marines, is saving anywhere between $200-$400 a month being too optimistic if I go in as PFC?
You can save a lot more than that, just don't be a drunken Marine, or a xboxaholic Marine.

You can save almost everything you make. Just stay on base all the time, especially for meals. Buy yourself a nice hair cutting system; you will save money on not paying for your haircuts, and maybe even make some money on Sunday nights/Monday mornings when Marines show up without a haircut.

You could even get a second job on the weekends depending on your flexability and MOS. Making a couple extra hundred a month never hurts.
You basically have to make the decision to sacrifice your freetime and nights out with your fellow Marines if you want to save the maximum.
