U.S. Marine's Hymn
Rick Busciglio

The best known military song maybe the "Marine's Hymn.' It is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps and is the oldest official song in the U.S. military. Per Wikipedia: "The song has an obscure origin—the words date from the 19th century, but no one knows the author. The music is from the Gendarmes' Duet from the opera Geneviève de Brabant by Jacques Offenbach, which debuted in Paris in 1859. The Marine Corps secured a copyright on the song on August 19, 1919, but it is now in the public domain.

The initial verse is "From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli." "Montezuma" refers to the Battle of Chapultepec, more commonly known as the battle which took place during the Mexican-American War; "Tripoli" refers to the First Barbary War and the Battle of Derne."

Here is the U.S. Marine Hymn as performed by the Morman Tabernacle Choir.

One of the first things we had to learn in boot camp.

I remember the last guy on fire watch would wake the DI by rapping on his hatch 3 times followed by singing the Hymn.

8 years active in the Corps and nearly 13 years in the Air Force Reserve, and I can STILL recite the words of the Marine's hymn. :usmc:

I also have the Hymn as my ringtone. I can still recite both it and the Rifleman's Creed after all this time. I did the whole creed the other day for people at work and it blew them away. Most didn't know that there was so much more than what was in "Full Metal Jacket"

I have never entered upon such (arguable) "traditions" as "OOO-rah," "Get some!, " calling the United States Marine Corps "The Suck," etc. but--even after some 56 years--I still stand with pride and teared-eyed at attention when the Marines' Hymn is played. Not so when a band performs ANYTHING else.

Semper Fidelis...

Totally agree **** nuts.

Now, where do I find a ringtone of The Hymm.

... and I don't mean, 'him, him, **** him,', but it would be kinda neat.
