PATRIOTS POINT, SC (WCSC) - On Memorial Day, Colonel Mac Radcliffe, USMC (Ret.) joined other marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate price.

"It's incumbent on those who are living that the words ‘they should not die in vain' have meaning," Radcliffe said.

"They died for a reason for us and they should be recognized," Capt. John Flinn USMC (Ret.) said,

Patriots Point has had many services since it opened to the public in 1976, but this is the first Memorial Day service that was landside.

The service was held at the Vietnam support base camp, letting Vietnam Veterans know their service and sacrifice is remembered and truly appreciated. "Those who served in Vietnam fought as hard, as honorably, and as long as soldiers in previous wars. They didn't get the same welcome as those in World War II when they got back," Radcliffe said.

Dick Trammell says Memorial Day is important for military families as well. "Not only did they give their all but their families gave up a loved one to protect us," Trammell said.

And as Americans we need to remember men and women still give their lives in war so we can live our lives in peace.
