Corps eases on reflective vest policy for motorcycling Marines
Published Friday, May 22, 2009

As of May 8, motorcycle riders across the Marine Corps are no longer required to wear reflective vests, according to a directive from the Corps' 21st Executive Safety Board.

Marines are still required to wear other protective gear on their bikes -- including helmets, long-sleeved and long-legged clothing, full-fingered gloves and hard-soled shoes -- but the Corps said it didn't believe the vests were saving lives.

More changes to the order are expected and likely will include language that encourages -- but does not require -- Marines to wear abrasion protective outerwear, fluorescent colors and reflective material appropriate for riding conditions, according to the Corps.
