The project allows children who have lost a loved one in military service to express their grief through painting umbrellas, which symbolize protection.

More than 40 decorated umbrellas were put on display Monday at Lynnhaven Mall, where they will stay in the Center Court through Sunday.

The project is coordinated by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a national resource and support program for people affected by the death of a service member. TAPS will hold the Hampton Roads Umbrella Project Gala and Auction at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

Proceeds from the event will aid the national TAPS prgram and its new local leg, the Hampton Roads Survivor Link.

Isabella Owens of Virginia Beach, 7, pictured above, looks for a place to lay the umbrella she decorated in memory of her father, Ronald Scott Owens, as part of The Umbrella Project. Owens was killed in the USS Cole bombing in 2000.

Isabella's umbrella, pictured above, featured drawings and sentences hand painted in white: ``I love my daddy. My daddy loves me. My daddy is in my heart. My daddy was an American. My daddy died for his country.''
