MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. —

Four Marines from the Security Battalion Special Reaction Team won the Police Week Law Enforcement Physical Training Challenge at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., on May 11.

Cpl. Justin Winecoff, Lance Cpl. Kyle Phillips, Lance Cpl. Matthew Helmkamp and Lance Cpl. James Elsesser tested their skills against airmen from the 318th Security Forces Squadron in a series of events that consisted of a six-kilometer run with a flak jacket and weapon, push-ups, sit-ups, a humvee tug-of-war and a shooting competition using the M9 service pistol.

The SRT conducted physical training five times a week and ollowed a strict cardiovascular routine in preparation for the event.

“It was obvious the other teams had been preparing for a while,” said Winecoff, a team leader with Security Bn. “They were really competitive.”

Winecoff said his job as team leader was to motivate his Marines during each event and ensure they finished as a unit. Adding that, even though he thought he and his Marines would win the event, he expected it to be easier than it was.

“The lieutenant colonel who presented the trophy to us said if he had to lose to anybody, it would be to the Marine Corps,” said Winecoff.

The competition promoted interservice camaraderie.

“By the end of the day, everybody was patting one another on the back and saying, ‘Good job,’” he said.

Phillips participated in the final event, in which 15 pins were placed between seven and 30 yards, leaving the shooter who hit the pins in the fastest time the winner.

“It wasn’t easy,” said Phillips. “It was point shooting, which is different from what we’re used to. It was a transition from what we normally train for. It took discipline to hold back on the trigger.”

The airmen, against whom the Marines competed, trained for weeks leading up to the event. “You could tell they had prepared for it,” Phillips said. “I give kudos to them for their effort. [But,] “it felt good to win,” he said.
