MARINES TREATED TO GOLF BY NEW JERSEY CLUB

By GEORGE WILLIS

May 20, 2009 --

The privilege of enjoying a country lifestyle can be traced to many things, including economics, social status, and the love of golf.

Another element often overlooked is freedom, the kind of freedom that can be traced back to our armed forces.

With that in mind, Eagles Oaks Golf and Country Club in Farmingdale, N.J., will be host to about 125 Marines on Thursday in what is being called "Honor Day." The Marines essentially will become members of the club for a day of golf, dining and fundraising.

"Everybody thinks it's just a wonderful idea," said John Beurskens, the assistant general manager at Eagle Oaks. "It's a way to thank people who give of themselves."

The day calls for 44 Marines from the USS Iwo Jima docked in Manhattan for Fleet Week to be picked up and paired with 44 club members for a

round of golf. Later that day, about 80 more Marines will arrive for dinner and a program.

Members had to make donations to play golf with a Marine, and other funds were raised through dinner tickets and other donations. The money will go to the Marine Corp Council, which supports the quality of life for former, active and wounded Marines.

"This is a positive thing," Beurskens said. "Our members are excited about the opportunity to give back."
