RALEIGH - The state House voted on Thursday to honor the Marines by naming stretches of a couple highways in eastern North Carolina the U.S. Marine Corps Parkway.

U.S. 17 from Holly Ridge to Edenton and U.S. 70 from U.S. 17 to N.C. 101 would get the distinction under the bill that now goes to the Senate.

Onslow County Republican Rep. George Cleveland, one of the sponsors, pointed out a semantics problem with the bill which also labels the highway "Home of Carolina Marines since 1941."

"There is no such thing as Carolina Marines," Cleveland said. He said the inscription should read "Home of Carolina-based Marines since 1941."

The bill was also sponsored by Reps. Russell Tucker, D-Duplin, Larry Hall, D-Durham, and Paul "Skip" Stam, R-Wake.

The bill passed on a 114-0 vote.
