When Marines and sailors of MARSOC went to work Monday morning, they were with Foreign Military Training Unit companies A and B, Marine Special Operations Advisor Group. By 2:15 p.m., they were a part of the 3rd and 4th Marine Special Operations Battalions.

"(This is) a historic day for MARSOC as we move forward in our chapter of history," said Col. Daniel Masur, commander of the MARSOC Advisor Group.

The Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command, hosted a ceremony Monday redesignating companies A and B of the Marine Special Operations Advisor Group the 3rd and 4th Marine Special Operations Battalions. The redesignation is part of MARSOC's larger effort to standardize all four battalions within MARSOC, according to MARSOC Public Affairs.

Company A was formed in March 2006 as the first headquarters under the command of the Foreign Military Training Unit. It was responsible for training and deploying teams to assist foreign military forces with training, and training and deploying teams to assist foreign military forces with training and advisor support to facilitate U.S. objectives in the war on terror, according to information from MARSOC. Company B formed in April 2007 and was responsible for training and deploying teams to provide training and advisory support to foreign military forces.

About 100 Marines were present for the redesignation while 11 of the unit teams were deployed throughout the world, doing what they have been trained to do, Masur said.

"This is a great day where Alpha and Bravo companies, who've been acting as battalions for some time now, are designated as such," he said.

The redesignation "better reflects the responsibilities," of the battalions as they grow, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Eichholz said.

The 3d and 4th Marine Special Operations Battalions train, organize, equip and deploy Marine Special Operations Forces for worldwide special operations missions, according to information from MARSOC.
