I have looked on the internet about people who have experienced lower back pain from simple hikes and have only found people who had extreme preexisting injuries to have problems with hiking. I have no preexisting injuries, good boots, and I am in shape. After a 12 mile hike yesterday (with no extra weight strapped to my back), I started to feel pain in the muscles in my lower back. The next morning I could barely get out of bed and I am still lying down. What could I have done wrong and what are some good methods to avoid further injury in the future. My internet search only said hydrate and foot ware... something is not right because I have done that.

I need more info.

12 mile hike with no pack?
Was this your first hike?
or have you building to that length?
What was the terrain?
How long have you had your current footwear?
Have you been stretching your back after the hikes?
How much are you hydrating before and after?
What is your calcium intake like?
Did you work out with weights the day before?

I have one question. Have you been training your lower back at all? If not, the problem is that you're neglecting this portion of your muscle. My advice is to go in the weight room and start strengthening it. Do deadlift, it's good for you. Make sure you have the proper form though.
