Wounded Warriors spend the day fishing

By: Smitha Rao

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. – Injured Marines from the Wounded Warriors Battalion East at Camp Lejeune got the chance to kick back and go fishing all day Wednesday.

It was another way for the community to show its support and appreciation for the Marines.

“I just think it’s a great opportunity for people to get to experience different things, even though they did face some hardship,” Cpl. Ryan Hughes said.

Hughes said it creates a nice support system. And organizers agree.

“We want these young men to understand the civilian community does support them,” coordinator Richard Phelps said.

All the Marines in the Wounded Warriors were wounded while overseas, most while serving in Iraq.

And support from the community lets the Marines know exactly how highly event organizers think of them.

“We use the term hero too much, especially when it involves sports figures. And our American military are our true heroes,” Phelps said.

A total of 25 Marines took part in the event. It takes place in other parts of the state as well.
