View Full Version : MOS confusion
I got sworn in last Friday and I'm so confused as to what MOS I want to pick. Its either security forces or infantry. Yes yes, i knows there's been a lot of talk on each of the subject here and your probably going to tell me to use the search, but I'm tired of searching because when people talk about it they tend to go off into tangents and talk about other things, I just want some clear cut answers. I heard being in the security force is basically like being a "glorified security guard," my question is is how do you request to travel to bases in Europe and stuff. I've never seen outside my home state, besides going to NY, and i really want to see the world. Also, is security forces boring and is it true you are not really respected by most marines? If i go infantry, is it a possibility that i get to see the world as well? I know I'll most likely see afghanistan or iraq and that'll be interesting too, but what about other places? Which one of these MOS's is better suited for the civilian world after my contract is up? Which one will give me the most opportunities to go onto other things in the Unites States Marine Corps?

If you didnt know already, the Security Forces program is called UV. The UV program requires you to sign a 5 year contract. You spend the first 2 years of the contract doing security forces, then the last 3 with infantry. So you'll get to do both.
Hope that helps

I was told it was 3 years SF and 2 years Infantry, I guess you can choose?

In the program description it explains that security forces is a 2 year billet. Upon completion you will be transfered to the fleet with an infantry unit. If you were told differently I would ask again or check your paperwork.

First, it is Marine, not marine.
Now, if I were you I would choose the UV option, if it is available to you. Like mbrazil said, that way you get to do both. In terms of seeing the world, that depends on where you are initially stationed. If you are in Okinawa (Japan), for example, you might go all over the Pacific (Thailand, the Phillipenes, Korea, Australia, etc). If you are CONUS chances are you will only see Iraq, Afghanistan, or whatever the current theater of operations is. Infantry units stationed in Okinawa train in foreign countries a lot, while infantry units stationed CONUS mostly train stateside.
In terms of getting to Europe, though, I don't know. My recruiter was stationed in Spain, but his was a rare case (that was his re-enlistment incentive.
Hope this helps.

I personally would love to know why every swinging dick wants infantry or security forces? Like I'm sure they'll help you a little bit in the civilian world but why not something like comm? My comm instructor for my MOS which is 0623, well he has like 14months left and he has been getting job offers up in the 98,000 to 150,000 range just because he has been doing that job for so many years granted its a boring job I would guess because at the end of the course he told me to go and try out for MARSOC, but still dont get your mind stuck on One MOS.

I think you just said 0623, which means that jobs that require this field are also military oriented, usually implying contractor jobs i.e. Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin. The pay is definitely excellent, but it isn't secure, first come first serve is how they let people go and how they're firing/laying everyone off at the moment.

I don't really question why anyone picks an MOS. Everyone has a different idea of what they want to do in life, and how they want to get there. I chose infantry because I feel that grunts have more pride and passion for their job than any other MOS. It may not get me some ridiculous salary in the civilian world but I'm not too concerned with that. The Marine Corps will definately give anyone marketable skills regardless of MOS. As for the $98-150k, that's good on your instructor, but I don't see someone with your level of grammar getting paid that amount of money. Honestly this post got on my nerves for some reason.

Ok so check this out poolees, first off you are signing up to do great things. Forget the commercials on TV and what the recruiter told you. Some of them are out there just to make the numbers and you don't know which one you got the honest one or the one that just wants to get through his B-Billet. I was very gullable back in the day and believed everything that I was told, until I arrived at MCT and found out my MOS. I picked 0311 and was given 0411, trippy eh? But hey if this happens to any of you please know that no matter what you are part of the elite. Make the best of what you got and know that the feeling of being able to see your family that one day before graduation will be the day that will give you the greatest feeling you will ever have. And don't forget, every Marine is a rifleman.
At first I wanted Aviation Mechanics, since I enjoy that kind of stuff, I also wanted active duty, but wasn't able to get it (as I was told). So I got stuck with a contract 3536 (most sought after job in the Motor T field) reservist, but this doesn't bother me, (other then my current LVS school, which is boring as hell) since I enjoy the MOS I am in.
What I am saying, really what ever job you be in, except cook, you will most likely enjoy it. Also being a Marine is what really counts, and fighting for the country we live in.

Pretty much any of the Combat Arms MOS's you'll get to see the world. Remember, Every Marine A Rifleman. I was a Cannon Cocker for 8 years and I was rarely in the US as I was on a pump to the Med, WestPac, or the Rock (Okinawa) Good Luck!

Cold Blooded,
What is your MOS? Just wondering. I had a few great friends in A company Second Recon at Lejeune. One was a RIP Instructor and the others were in working teams. I think one ended up being a Sergeant Major, I don't know if he's still in or not. He did a tour with Force as well. I also worked with an :flag:outstanding Marine who was with 2d ANGLICO. Take care!
