Canceling 'Six Days in Fallujah' Dishonors Iraq War Veterans, Says Developer
May 4, 11:51 AM

Controversial Iraq War video game Six Days in Fallujah was scheduled for release by big game publisher Konami until outcry over the game caused Konami to cancel it just as quick as it was announced. Well, the game's maker Atomic Games is a 65-person company that had invested millions of dollars in the title and is not going quietly into the cold night.

CEO of Atomic Games, developer of Six Days..., Peter Tamte wrung his hands very publicly recently, essentially saying that the games industry can be a bunch of spineless pantie-wastes, crumbling in the face of hostile fire. Real-life Marines and their tales of heroism in Fallujah inspired the title, Tamte told the Observer, and it shouldn't be left to bleed out in the open as savvy snipers pick apart the game's premise.

"Are we really just high-tech toymakers, or are we media companies capable of producing content that is as relevant as movies, music and television ... these Marines asked us to tell their story. They asked us to tell their story through the most relevant medium of the day -- a medium they use the most -- and that is the video game."

"The game ups the authenticity ante because it is based on battle maps and plans by Marines who fought in Fallujah, including recreating actual firefights ... It's an opportunity for the world to experience the true stories of the people who fought in one of the world's largest urban battles of the past half-century."

Tamte was the keynote speaker Thursday at the Triangle Game Conference at the Raleigh Convention Center. He indicated Six Days ... might find a new publisher.
