Marines base to get numerous upgrades
BEAUFORT COUNTY — Construction crews will be a familiar sight at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island this summer as the Corps rebuilds, renovates and revamps the depot’s aging facilities and infrastructure.
In addition to a $78 million project to build new barracks for the 3rd Recruit Battalion, eight construction projects will be launched on the base, which the Corps has called home since 1915.
The work includes $2.9 million in renovations to the exterior and interior of Traditions, a restaurant in the former officer’s club. A new $3.6 million youth center is expected to open in August.
The depot also is slated to receive $10 million in federal stimulus money for energy-efficiency and infrastructure-improvement projects, which are expected to begin this summer.
