NC Marines to kick off motorcycle safety month

Associated Press - May 4, 2009 4:05 AM ET

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) - Marines at a North Carolina base will join with the state Highway Patrol to promote motorcycle safety after 25 Marines were killed in motorcycle crashes in 2008.

Darrell Jernigan, North Carolina's highway safety program director, and Maj. Gen. Carl B. Jensen, Marine Corps Installations East commanding general, will kick off Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Monday at Camp Lejeune.

Motorcycle safety has become a pressing issue in the Marine Corps. Since 2004, Marine Corps motorcycle-related deaths have risen every year. Between 2006 and 2008, there were 208 motorcycle crashes involving Marines with 65 fatalities. The Marine Corps found more than 70% of the riders had not completed a certified safety course.
