Tough Guy How did you spend your weekend?

The idea that one person would voluntarily attempt two days of extreme strength and endurance testing under the blistering heat may seem hard to fathom, but 21 people took that challenge during the Tough Guy Weekend held Saturday and Sunday at various locations across the state of Virginia.

Now in its fifth year, the event, which was first introduced as part of a class at the Expeditionary Warfare School, challenged competitors to a series of events that included running, biking, canoeing and an endurance course.

“We’re trying to make it so every individual event will [make for] an aggressive weekend for someone,” said Erik Jilson, a reservist, who competed, and teamed with Patrick Beckett as the weekend’s organizers. “But altogether it’s kind of a crazy weekend.”

The 21 competitors were split into five groups of four, with five in one group.

Members of the winning team in team events such as the “Canoe-a-thon” each received five points. The top five finishers in the individual events earned points ranging from five for the first to one for the fifth, toward their total points.

The rundown of events began with a duathlon, involving a 5K run, 11K bike ride and another 3K run, in Richmond; a bike-canoe-foot race between Ramer Hall at The Basic School and Lunga Park Reservoir; a strongman medley competition involving five events, and a grappling tournament.

The second day’s events included a 10-mile run from Mount Vernon to Alexandria; a biathlon combination of 1-mile runs and shooting exercises, and an endurance course that combined two obstacle courses and a trail run.

Joel Hoffman was crowned the toughest guy after finishing first in the duathlon, grappling tournament, 10-mile race and biathlon (with his group).
