Marines recognized for exceptional shooting

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The mantra of “every Marine a rifleman” rang true as friends, family and competitors gathered for the 2009 Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Matches awards ceremony April 24.
The ceremony recognized the top shooters from the past six weeks of matches held at Stone Bay, MCB Camp Lejeune.
In the individual rifle match, Staff Sgt. Jason Haislip, a two-year veteran of the Marine Corps Shooting Team, came away first with a score of 1,160 and was awarded the McDougal trophy. He also received a Secretary of The Navy Trophy Rifle, a specially prepared M-1 Garand. Placing 2nd with a score of 1,159 was Chief Warrant Officer James Fraley with the MC Shooting Team.
Discussing the importance of the match with his teammates, Haislip said, “It’s all about what you take back to the fleet. The whole reason this exists is to increase the combat effectiveness of the individual Marine.”
Chief Warrant Officer Michael Sierra of the Pacific Division Shooting Team was awarded the 2009 Marine Corps Pistol Match Champion with a score of 560. He received the Secretary of the Navy Trophy Rifle, a distinguishing certificate and the Walsh Trophy. Placing second with a score of 547, Staff Sgt. William Janssen of the Far East Division Shooting Team received a distinguishing certificate. The Far East Division Shooting Team hails from various installations across Japan.
The 2009 Lauchheimer Trophy was awarded to the three competitors with the highest combined score for both rifle and pistol. With a score of 1,691, Farley shot his way to first place. Winning second place was Chief Warrant Officer Peter Burns with a score of 1,680 and coming in a close third was Janssen with a 1,679.
The final portion of the ceremony was the team awards. The Inter-Division Rifle Team trophy was awarded to the Far East Division Shooting Team with a score of 3,358. The Far East Division Shooting Team also won the Inter-Division Pistol Team trophy with a score of 1,083.
The Fleet Marine Force Combat Infantry Trophy is awarded to the rifle team with the highest combined score. The Western Division Silver Shooting Team took the victory with a score of 1,153.
A small percentage of winners will be selected to represent the Marine Corps at the Inter-Service Championships and the National Matches as members of the Marine Corps Shooting Team.
Maj. Gen. Carl B. Jensen, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations-East, presented the awards during the ceremony.
“Marines are known for our ability to slay America’s foes. One shot one kill,” Jensen explained, asking only one thing from the winners. “Take home what you’ve learned and pass it along. Take the skills and techniques you all learned and school your Marines. We fight as a team, that’s how it works.”
