Yuma-based Marine Aircraft Group 13 has been awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation by the secretary of the Navy for superior aviation resources worldwide.

According to the award citation, the 1,800 Marines and sailors assigned to MAG-13 and its five subordinate squadrons effectively met and exceeded all operational requirements in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom between February 2006 and February 2007.

MAG-13, which includes Marine Attack Squadrons 211, 214, 311, 513 and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13, was awarded the MUC for its dedicated mission focus, flying 9,520 missions worldwide and accumulating 18,295 training and combat flight hours.

“The aircraft group consistently overcame all challenges encountered and represented the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and the Marine Corps in an exemplary manner,” said B. J. Penn, acting secretary of the Navy, in the award citation.

“Quite simply, it is a testimony to the great work the MAG did in the 2006 time frame,” said Lt. Col. Eric Austin, MAG-13 executive officer. “The Marines of MAG-13 performed superbly at every turn.”

“During 2006, every Harrier squadron in MAG-13 deployed and the group had a significant number of individual augments supporting combat operations around the globe, making this award even more significant,” said Austin. “This award certainly includes those Marines who remained in Yuma, training, supporting and preparing each squadron for their respective deployment.”
