ELK GROVE - Lt. Col. Marion Matundan Manuta of Elk Grove, has helped troops combat one of the leading causes of killing soldiers - improvised explosive devices - more commonly known as roadside bombs.

We've seen countless soldiers and marines killed by them here. Most recently, it took the life of a Tracy Marine.

But for more than 20 years, Lt. Col. Manuta has fought for freedom all over the world, including Haiti and in Iraq.

Now at the Pentagon, she continues that mission, bringing help to the front lines of Operation Iraqi Freedom by providing training and proper equipment. She's seen first-hand the destruction of IEDs at their peak.

"Now, I think as we see the decrease of incidents and fatalities of our Soliders, Sailors, our Marines and Airmen that are out there, I think we can attribute that to the training," she said.

Manuta also assists NATO nations develop its counter IED capabilities. She is expected to be back home in Elk Grove with her family by next year, when she will return to her civilian job as a project manager for Oracle.
