A Camp Lejeune serviceman who saved the life of a fellow Marine during a training accident will receive the Navy and Marine Corps Medal in a ceremony this morning.

Cpl. Brian Rogers, a squad leader assigned to Combat Training Battalion, will receive the medal at a 9 a.m. ceremony. The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is the highest medal awarded by the Marine Corps for heroism during peacetime.

According to a release from base public affairs, Rogers was serving as a grenade pit noncommissioned officer, which involves supervising entry-level Marines, when the incident occurred. A Marine student improperly threw a hand grenade that landed in the pit where Rogers and the Marine were positioned. Rogers pulled the Marine from the pit just seconds before it exploded.
