MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif.(July 11, 2003) -- A Marine machine gunner serving as a marksmanship coach at Edson Range, Camp Pendleton, Calif., was killed Saturday while driving his motorcycle east on Highway 74 near Lake Elsinore, Calif.

Cpl. Anthony Damien is survived by his wife, Alejandra, and their 10-month-old son, Anthony Damien Jr. who reside in Riverside, Calif. He was 23.

Damien left Weapons Field Training Battalion at 7:30 a.m. and was on his way home after being relieved of his stand-by driving duty, according to 1st Sgt. David V. Hannin, Edson Range first sergeant.

According to Officer Brad Barksdale, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson in Temecula, Damien failed to negotiate a curve in the road and collided into a Ford Bronco heading west sometime around 8 a.m.

The weather was clear and the roads were dry, Barksdale added.

Paramedics arrived, and at 8:30 a.m., they pronounced Damien dead at the scene, which was about two miles east of Grand Avenue in Lake Elsinore. No others were physically injured.

Damien, a native of Wilmington, Calif., enlisted Sept. 20, 1998.

He arrived at Weapons Field Training Battalion at Edson Range in September 2000. He coached riflemen at Bravo Range.

"Cpl. Damien was a superb Marine with a superb personality," said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Timothy Szymanski, range officer, Bravo Range.

According to Szymanski, Damien loved the Los Angeles Dodgers, NASCAR and hot dogs.

"We used to carpool together, and he was a good friend of mine," said Sgt. Octavio Sanchez, block noncommissioned officer, Bravo Range. "He had a great sense of humor and always made the best of things."
