NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The US Marine Corps presented an award to local K-9 teams to show their appreciation.

K-9 Teams from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Wilmington Police Department recently assisted the US Marine Corp in a specialized 18-day training exercise for new recruits.

The recruits were put in Croatan National Forest for the duration of the training with minimal food and survival necessities. The K-9 teams were used for a 3-day period for basic tracking of the recruits.

Those involved said it was a win-win situation because the marines got experience learning what it was like to be tracked, and the K-9 unit gained some practice.

The Wilmington Police Department also took part in the training exercise and will receive certificates for their participation.
