I know the basic job description, pretty much the same as what the civilian counterparts do(reading plans and what not) but I was wondering if anyone here knows what they do on a day to day basis.

ProtectnServe,
Think about it.
"Metalworks" tells me they work with metal. Either after a formal school, or through On The Job Training, they were "hired" to be a metalworker. Therefore, they will do the same job as their civilian counterparts.
What does a photographer, civilian or military do? He takes pictures.
What does a truckdriver do, civilian or military? He drives a truck.
A communicator communicates, a cook cooks, a machinist machines, a plumber plumbs, a flyer flies, a mechanic mechanics, a reporter reports, and they all look up to the grunting grunt.
On a day to day basis, they do the job they were trained for.

Thanks for the common sense, but an 8 year old can figure out that a Metalworker would be working with metal just like a plumber plumbs, but what I wanted to know is what _EXACTLY_ kind of metalworking I would be doing on a day to day basis.
Theres more than one way to weld metal together, so I also would've liked to know which is the main way they use in the Corps.

This is a pdf of Individual training standards for the 1300 field, metalworker is a 1316 - find that section (http://www.usmc.mil/directiv.nsf/9d816d546727ed748525651700581631/10b649601c42cc85852569770049fb5b/$FILE/MCO%201510.95A.pdf)
It will explain everything in more detail that you would like.

First and foremost, I take issue with your “tone” - unacceptable! If you make it to and through Boot Camp, you had best think twice before ever speaking to a First Sergeant (let alone any sergeant or corporal) in such a manner.
You were given a common sense answer to your question. If you don’t care for it, I suggest to start asking 8 year olds for their advice on any question you have, concerning the Corps. Next time, you should ask the EXACT question you want answered in order to receive the EXACT answer you wish to have.
Also, you nearly answered your own question - There is more than one way to weld metal together. I’d suspect that, given the circumstances, environment, types of metal used and the application that most all types of welding can and will be implemented.
Day in and day out - day to day basis - you will be considered a Marine. A Marine can be a duty driver, stand a guard post and/or fill an assortment of billets (e.g., mess duty, mail room, production control, office clerk, etc.). In other words, you are placed wherever the Marine Corps or your command needs you most. You will also be required to perform your primary MOS as well as any and all duties assigned as necessary.
Last bit of advice for you. Get some thicker skin. If what the First Sergeant said to you rubbed you wrong, you’ll have a tough time in the Corps. It isn’t high school. You’ll be expected to act appropriately - tact, bearing and discipline are words to remember and live by.

I agree with you there Rat. I'm still a poolee but I been here a while. Sounds like he just needed some "motivational" talking to him. If I would of saw this post sooner I would have tried to talk to him first but you beat me to it. Darn it!!!

Rat, I had already written the FirstSgt. an apology for any disrespect pertaining to my reply.
I am not a Marine yet, and I have all the respect in the world for anyone who is in the Corps, but just because someone is a high rank in the military, I dont think it makes them any better than anyone else who takes a different path in life, or hasn't had the chance to be a Marine yet. And it does not make them invincible.
I probably should have been a little bit clearer about the information I wanted, but I dont think I deserved the smart anwser either.

You did a good job of accepting responsibility and for taking the necessary steps to make it right. Good job! It's called integrity. Keep it up.

Shaffer, I disagree. The fact that someone has obtained the rank of First Sgt. does in fact make them better than any poolee out there. It is how the Marine Corps works, you respect those with a higher rank, regardless of what you may want to think. He said ", I dont think it makes them any better than anyone else who takes a different path in life, or hasn't had the chance to be a Marine yet. And it does not make them invincible. "
This is 1000% wrong. regardless of path or opportunity, this man has earned and accomplished something that few ever will. If you aspire to be a Marine you should bust your butt to show the proper respect to a Marine of this caliber.

I have tons of respect for the FirstSgt. hes anwsered a few of my questions about the Corps since my post, very much appreciated.
but as for him being a better person just becuase hes FirstSgt, and me just being a poolee I guess you and I disagree there. Everyones entitled to their opinions, you have yours and I have mine.

I think you misread the above post. The comment had nothing to do with rank or the Marine Corps. The comment had to do with integrity. Admitting that he made a mistake in his tone and apologizing both in public and in private is commendable. It takes a big person to say they were wrong. Which this kid (regardless of being a poolee, Marine, mom or dad) did. Hopefully he will take it as a learning experience.

You're right, I just didn't want to reinforce the attitude that he still has. The comments made in reply to me are still lacking, but I guess that is why poolees are poolees. Recruit Training will show him the light.
