Watertown firm official vendor for ship built from World Trade Center wreckage

BY MARC SILVESTRINI | REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN

There are many reasons Gary DeCavage, a Watertown-based printer and graphic designer, is pleased to be the official vendor of promotional items for the commissioning of the newest addition to the Navy fleet, the USS New York LPD 21.

For one thing, the 25,000-ton, 684-foot San Antonio-class LPD (Landing Platform Dock) amphibious-assault ship's primary mission will be to transport Marines in and out of combat operations and provide a platform for close air support during military engagements. DeCavage is a former Marine.

For another, a percentage of the proceeds from selling the promotional items for the ship's commissioning will support a foundation that was created to aid the ship's sailors and their families.

Then there is the fact that DeCavage already has a strong business connection to the Navy, as the exclusive vendor for both the Navy League of the United States and the Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

The Navy League is a nationwide group of about 65,000 civilians that advocates and informs the public and elected officials about maritime issues and supports U.S. sea servicemen and women and their families. The sea services include the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. The Sea Cadet Corps is a nonprofit youth organization, established by the Navy League. It provides American youngsters with maritime and leadership training in an effort to "teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues."

And, finally, there's the ship itself.

The USS New York, which will be formally commissioned Nov. 7 in ceremonies on the Hudson River in New York City, has an historical and emotional connection that makes it different from any other vessel in the Navy fleet. It's bow contains 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center.

The $1 billion warship, which will have a crew of 360 sailors and three Marines, is designed to carry landing forces of up to 800 Marines. Its motto: "Never forget."

"This is a special ship in that it's a permanent tribute to all those people who lost their lives that day in New York City," DeCavage said. "I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to take part in this project."
