U.S. authorities begin investigation on plane crash at Marine base

U.S. authorities began an investigation Sunday on the crash of a small plane at a Marine Corps air base in Southern California, in which the pilot and a passenger were killed.

The single-engine Piper Comanche airplane was flying over the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, about 180 kilometers south of Los Angeles, when it crashed onto the ground on Saturday morning, according to a National Transportation Safety Board official.

Wayne Pollack, chief investigator of the NTSB, said the pilot did not make a distress call before he lost communication and investigators will examine radio communications between controllers and the pilot next week.

Authorities have not yet released any names for the two victims, although the plane was registered to a Burbank resident, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane had taken off from a local airport near Los Angeles and was heading to Brown Field Municipal Airport near the Mexican border.

Not far from Saturday's crash site, four people were killed on the ground last December when a U.S. Marines Corps F/A 18 Hornet fighter jet crashed in a residential neighborhood south of the San Diego military base. The pilot escaped safe with slight injuries.
