EASTON —

The family of Marine Lance Cpl. Ryan Walsh, who was injured last summer while serving in Afghanistan, is planning a golf tournament in June to benefit the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

Tournament Chairwoman Michele Casey, Walsh’s sister, said her family is seeking the community’s support for the project, hoping to sell tickets and sponsorships and obtain donations of prizes and auction items.

Walsh, who entered the Marines after graduating from Oliver Ames High School in 2005, is undergoing rehabilitation at Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland. He lost a finger and broke two legs during an ambush in July.

“During his recovery and rehabilitation in the U.S., our family was fortunate enough to receive grants from the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund to visit Ryan in the hospital,” Casey said.

“Seeing Ryan for the first time after he was injured was a tremendously emotional experience that proved to be invaluable to our entire family during his recovery,” Casey said.

The family is planning the Helping Heroes Golf Tournament and Dinner on June 1 at the Easton Country Club and Pine Oaks Golf Club in South Easton.

Their goal is to raise awareness of the need for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, which supports Marines injured during combat or training, or who have life-threatening illnesses, and their families.

Since 2004, the fund has provided more than 13,000 grants, totaling more than $28 million, to assist wounded veterans and their families.

The shot-gun start golf tournament will begin at 10:45 a.m. The $130 fee, part of which is tax deductible, includes a round of golf, golf cart, boxed lunch and the awards dinner.

There will be prizes for the top foursomes, longest drive and closest to the pin. A dinner, auction and awards presentation will follow the tournament at 4 p.m.

Tickets are also available for the dinner only at $50 per person.

Sponsorships are available at prices ranging from $100 to $1,000.

Donations of gift certificates, sports and event tickets, sports and golf equipment, vacations and other specialty merchandise are also being sought.

For more information or to register for the tournament, call 508-326-9947 or e-mail helpingheroes@comcast.net.

More information about the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund is available at www.semperfifund.org.

“Helping Heroes is an opportunity to say thank you to our troops for their heroism and to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund for unwavering dedication to its cause,” said Casey. “It is an honor to host an event that will make a difference in the lives of Marines and sailors who need assistance during their own hardships.”
