During a recent move my discharge certificate was damaged. Any info on how to get a replacement? Thanks for any info. SEMPER FI

Highly unlikely. The DoD considers your DD-214 to be the official documentation of discharge.

SaltDog: I believe he's actually talking about the Honorable Discharge Certificate, not the DD214 form.
I bet if you wrote your last command and explained what happened and requesting a new one...

If you are talking about The Honorable Discharge Certificate that has your name on the front with your SSN that you received in the mail after your 6 year commitment ended, or even a copy of your...

The easiest way to get a replace Honorable Discharge Certificate is to travel to the nearest Marine Corps Installation, go to Admin or IPAC with your DD214 and request a replacement. You will walk...

This is the real way to replace it and I know with absolute confidence. MMS prints you a new one for free! Call 1-800-268-3710 option 3. Fax them a written request to (703)784-5792. Include Name, DOB, SS# sign it and include your mailing address. I just found this out after years of searching!

I took the advice here -- I lost my original in a fire years ago. Took a while like Rocky said, but I got it not long ago and it was worth the wait. Thanks for the info, Marines

Ok so what if you did 2 years, got an honorable discharge, but it was for medical problems in the fleet? Do you still rate one, ive always wondered never looked into it to much. I have a copy of my...

Anyone?

Sgt Leprechaun

Yes, you rate an Honorable. Are you still in the IRR? If so, you won't get it until you totally finish. If not then you should be able to get one. (It won't be in your SRB, it's considered a personal document and not put in there).

echo3oscar1833

Negative. I never transferred to the IRR, I was a direct Seperation from Camp Lejuene. Had no obligation to the IRR because it was a Medical Seperation. So would I still rate one? My DD-214 says...

Roger that, who in particular would you write for an Honorable Discharge Cert. I know in my case when I got my MUC, and GWOTSM I had to write to MMMA at Marine Corps Headquaters. I'm not sure if that...

Hey there, Fellas.

I found this topic and website via a google-search.
HMMM....First, welcome aboard!

You should have gotten an honorable discharge certificate, from what I remember. There is a WM here who was discharged about the same time, with the same sort of...

I filled-out, printed, and mailed the request form from the archives.org link that was posted.
I checked the "other" box and typed in "Honorable Discharge Certificate...

Good deal. Expect an average of 90-120 day wait I'm afraid.

Happened to let some moths out of my wallet and found my DD-217 Certificate Of Service (GPO : 1951---O-935480).

Found this older thread by accident and as I went thru the posts, I thought the DD-217 sounded like what was being discussed, but no one had mentioned it by the number I'm showing.

It is signed on the back by the same officer whose signature was on my DD-214, so I think it was issued at the same time I received my DD-214 rather than some later date. Just passing it on.

I seperated with 6 months left on my commitment and never received anything from the corps. All I have is the DD-214 copy that was handed to me on seperation. I thought the certificates were a thing of the past.

Sgt Leprechaun
06-20-11, 06:42 PM
They are not. If you still have time 'on contract' you'll get yours in the mail once it's done.

I had six months of my six years left on separation, however, that was 26 years ago....

Then, it should be in your complete OMPF, which you can request at no charge. It'll come on disc and you can print it out.

Took about a month or so. Was signed by a CWO3. The certificate had a individual serial number on the back. Sorry it took so long for me to post a reply, but this account is under an email address I don't use too often. At any rate, I would like to thank everyone for their help. ;)

I had to replace one of mine, this method worked great. I also enjoy the services of a replacement certificate, an active reserve time to complete, use the same method. Parris Island's IPAC is great, they take care of me with a smile...

A bit off topic, but aside from the Honorable Discharge certificate (DD-256), is there a DD-214 discharge form (or its equivalent) issued to Reservists? I only got the discharge certificate in the...

Sgt Leprechaun

Someone will likely correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the ONLY DD-214 you get from the reserves is when you end a period of active duty. I know I never got one for my reserve time, ever, until my final one for retirement.

My guess is you'd have to contact NPRC or your branches records section to get a copy of your service records.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in...
