Injured Marine's family flown to bedside

The family of a Wisconsin Marine badly wounded in Afghanistan has been flown to see him at a Maryland naval hospital with the help of the U.S. Marines and Midwest Airlines.

Cpl. Jacob L. Janes of Evansville lost both his legs below the knees April 3 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device, his stepsister, Jennifer Jordan of Milwaukee, said Thursday.

The Marines provided air transportation for his parents and sister to visit Janes at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, where he is being treated for his injuries, and Midwest provided flights for his stepmother and another sister, Jordan said.

The family left Wednesday night, she said.

Janes' family probably could have paid for the trip themselves but it would have put them under a financial strain, Jordan said.

And because the Marines could provide only three tickets, his family is thankful to Midwest for the other two, she said.

"They have been just beyond wonderful," Jordan said.

Janes, who has already served a tour of duty in Iraq, was scheduled to complete his tour in Afghanistan in about two weeks, Jordan said.

"It's going to be tough for him," she said.

"But he's a tough guy and there are a lot of people behind him."

Midwest officials couldn't be reached for comment.
