I am joining the reserves next year as i go through college as a 0311. Would anyone know my chances of deployment? I will be with the unit in Albany NY. Would there be anything i could do so i could be deployed faster?

Some reserve units deploy once a year, others once every 3 years, it really all depends in which one your at. You can still be deployed while going through college, but there are programs that allow you to stay in college without being deployed until you get a commission or I think failing. I'm just giving you a basic idea, don't go word for word from this, since I have gotten this from other reservists, so it might sound right but they could be wrong.

Each unit including reserves have a deployment rotation. I have also heard the once a year oe every three years depending the units rotation. To deploy faster you would have to switch units to one that is deploting. Not sure how you go about doing that.

That's a good question. I know as a non-obligor you can come and go and switch units with reasonable fluidity.

I'd be interested to see what the limitations are for contract reservist.

I just called my recruiter today and asked him if there was a way I could volunteer to be deployed after my training if my unit is not currently deployed and he said I could go whenever I want because I could be deployed with sister unit of the unit I would go into.

Got a buddy who is an 0311 in reserves and is on his way home. Said the LAR guys replacing him had their deployment chopped by a few months because they are not needed in Iraq anymore.

A lot of times Units will split it up as well. So your Unit can deploy every year, but you as a individual and your platoon may only go every 3 years or so. I'm heading out now for Iraq, first time my platoon has deployed since 06, however another platoon from the Unit just got back.

I've known guys that just put in the word they want to deploy during our years "off" and it works up the chain and they just get attached to other units going.

there are always billets open for deployments... you just need a commander who is willing to do the work to get you into one of them.

and I'd put it at 37.5437% chance 0231... you must have not gotten the news update... your figure is last weeks percentage.

My fault...I was going with the fixed scale. Didn't realize this week we were using the adjustable.

Once you graduate bootcamp, you'll receive a card from the Series Commander that has all of the percentages on it, both fixed and adjustable.

not serious in the least.

I can't even remember the question....

don't take it personal... we just exploited an opportunity... it's what Marines do. We're constantly training for war.

Now, sbombard15, your best shot in getting on a deployment soon after training is to go ask your Corporal when you get to your unit if you can borrow the key to the HMMWV.

I'm gonna send the kid some moto.

I'm gonna get some materials from an Army recruiter and box them up for him. I'll even include the picture of that fat doggie with the Marine Captain in the foreground trying to hold onto his bearing.

They're gonna love this kid! :D
