'Operation Cookie Bake' Launched for Twentynine Palms Marines

Students at St. Theresa's Catholic School arrived Tuesday morning bearing gifts: 1,000 cookies for Marines stationed at Twentynine Palms.
This philanthropic project was known as "Operation Cookie Bake."
"The Marines fight for our nation. The least we can do is bake cookies," explains Brittany Stoker-Ferris, a sixth grade student. "We can put a smile on their faces, and that touches my heart a lot."
Previously, the school located at South Compadre Road donated candy, blankets, and teddy bears for Iraqi children. But, this time, the students are taking care of those closer to home with packages filled with sweets and personal letters.
At least three students at St. Theresa's have a family member deployed. School principal Cheryl Corey wants the students to understand that many of the Marines are young adults, too.
"Six years from now, these sixth grade students will be graduating from high school, and they could be involved in this (war)," says Corey. "These kids being deployed today --- some of them only 18 years old -- graduated from high school last June."
One thousand Marines are being trained currently at the base. Hence, the number of cookies baked for them.
But the school will end up with more than double that amount. Parishioners of St. Theresa's Church found out about "Operation Cookie Bake" and volunteered to bake cookies, too.
Someone from the base will be picking up the boxes on Wednesday, says Principal Corey.
