My Great-Uncle just passed away last Friday. He served with the 1st Marines in WWII. I was given his green uniform and it has a patch over the right pocket. The patch is of a bird in a circle both are gold and it is a diamond shaped patch. I have no idea what the patch means. If you know please tell me.

Thanks for your help. :marine:

mrcobb served with the 1MARDIV in World War II. You might PM him and ask, he just might know the answer for you.

That is a "rupured Duck" patch, given to all WWII Honorably Discharged veterans.

A little history on thr "ruptured duck" patch...
"It was actually an eagle, but people called it a ruptured duck".
At the end of the war when civilian clothes were scarce, soldiers who'd gotten out of the service could wear their uniforms with the ruptured duck patch on the shoulder.
The patch meant that the person was a civilian".

I don't remember the patch, but I DO remember there was a lapel pin issued with the patch.

Sorry to hear about your great uncle, guy. We are loosing our WWII veterans faster & faster every day now. Each and everyone of us should take the time to speak to one of these walking history books and record their memories for all times, but we won't. We are all to lazy, myself included. In the last few years I have lost 2 Guadalcanal Marine vets from my own family. Now their history is lost. Shame on all of us.
