Marine Corps chopper makes landing in Montco

A U.S Marine Corps helicopter landed on an athletic field at Springfield High School in Montgomery County yesterday afternoon after running into a minor mechanical problem, the Marines said.

Four marines aboard the UH-1N helicopter were not injured, and there was no one on the field at the time of the landing, said Lt. Col. Bob Jablonski, executive officer of Marine Aircraft Group 49, based at Willow Grove.

The helicopter was on a training mission, flying from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Training Center in Johnstown, Pa., to the Willow Grove Naval Air Station when the mechanical problem occurred between 2 and 3 p.m., Jablonski said. The problem, which Jablonski said he could not specify, was repaired after one to two hours. The helicopter then resumed the mission and flew safely to Willow Grove. - Kristin Holmes
