I'm a Landing Support Specialist, 0481. You don't necessarily transport the troops, but you would send them on their way, or be on the receiving end.

What questions do you have about 0481?

The training is 5 weeks long. We load and unload cargo and passengers from trains, planes, helicopters, and ships. It is a good MOS. You won't be the one actively transporting the troops, but you...

0481 Red Patchers! I'm an 81 as well. Like JW said, you will pretty much be a shepherd for the guys coming or going, escorting them to and from the plane/helo/etc. You will also be building and loading cargo pallets, trucks, tanks, all kinds of vehicles. All their gear needs to go with them of course! You'll also be doing Helicoptor lifts, pretty cool part of the job. I like the job personally, i find it enjoyable and a critial part of an operation. You get to see a lot of the mechanics of things. Ports, Flightlines, Rail...

It seems to progress fairly well, i can't say for sure or anything. But from what i can tell its not to shabby.

You will attend MOS school at Camp Johnson NC....basically beside Camp Lejeune. Its like a 5min bus ride from MCT at Camp Gieger.

Yes, promotions are pretty quick in Logistics, because there is a lot of work to be done and a lot of opportunity to prove yourself. However, if you are a turd, then you will not be promoted anytime soon. That is the case in any MOS, though. But yes, promotions are faster in Logistics than some other MOSs.

This may seem like a stupid question, but I don't ever remember getting an answer when I was in. Why do you guys were the red patch?

It's so they know who gets to get back on the landing craft (or other form of transport). They don't want the Marines who are to stay trying to sneak back on.

How well do you have to do on the asvab to secure this mos?

We wear the red patch because in WWII Marines who cleared the beachheads (Landing Support Marines) could not be distinguished from the grunts. So grunts would often do LS jobs, and vice versa. So after WWII (or maybe during the war), they put red patches on our uniform, to distinguish us from the grunts. Personally I think it's a bullseye in the middle of my forehead, but maybe that's just me...

You need a GT score of 95 and an MM score of 100 to be an 0481. I bet these scores are slightly waiverable, as everything in the Marine Corps is waiverable, just about.

There are lots of tests in the Marine Corps. None of them are really all that difficult, because NCOs prepare us for them adequately. Don't worry about any tests in 0481 MOS school. We had a couple people flunk a few, but they really aren't that big a deal. Not hard if you pay attention.
