MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - With U.S. military forces transitioning from Iraq to Afghanistan, training must also reflect transition.

The 1st Marine Logistics Group’s Rear Area Security course at Camp De Luz’s Combat Skills Training Center here is undergoing curriculum changes to what the Marines and sailors can expect to experience in Afghanistan.

“We’re reverting training to Operation Enduring Freedom because not as many Marines are deploying to Iraq now,” said Sgt. Matthew M. “Tiny” Couch, RAS instructor, Combat Logistics Regiment 17, 1st MLG. Marines will need to switch their mindsets for Afghanistan explained Couch, 26, St. Louis.

Since 1st MLG Marines and Sailors are deploying soon, they’ll need the proper training to efficiently perform their jobs in the mountainous terrain.

“A change in the mission requires a change in the training,” said Gunnery Sgt. George E. Bailey, operations chief, CLR-17, 1st MLG. “Marines are going from an urban to mountainous environment.”

RAS course instructors are scheduled to participate in the Mountain Leaders Course at the Mountain Warfare Training Center at Bridgeport, Calif. There they’ll learn mountain operations tactics, techniques and procedures so they can better prepare 1st MLG service members for Afghanistan.

“The mountain leaders course would give the instructors more of what we’re looking for in our training,” said Bailey, 37, Cordele, Ga. “The more information the instructors gather up at the Mountain Warfare Training Center, the better information and training they can pass to the Marines through our training packages.”

Course leaders will soon use Camp De Luz’s new Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain facility to train their students for the upcoming deployment. The instructors are starting to have students conduct more of their patrolling on the steep hills that surround the RAS course camp.

Marines will be patrolling up and down hills at the RAS course to prepare them for the mountainous terrain in Afghanistan, explained the RAS course instructors.

Bailey stated that with the new curriculum, Marines and sailors with 1st MLG will be more prepared for the environment they’re deploying to.

“War in Iraq is tactically a different battle,” Bailey said. “OEF is a little more organized towards attacks on our forces; they’re more determined than in Operation Iraqi Freedom.”
