HAVELOCK - About 230 Marines from Cherry Point are scheduled to leave the base this weekend for duty in Iraq.

The Marines are part of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 and will be deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Marines are part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), which is deploying to Al Asad air base to provide aviation support to coalition forces, according to the Marine Corps.

The wing is providing command and control of aircraft, close air support, assault support, aerial reconnaissance, medical and casualty evacuations, logistical and engineering support, and electronic warfare in the region..

This is the second major deployment of Cherry Point units within a week. On Monday, about 60 Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 40 deployed to Afghanistan as part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. The deployment is part of a buildup of forces in Afghanistan.
