April is Month of the Military Child

4/3/2009 By Lance Cpl. Kel Clark , Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C. —The Air Station’s Child Development Center is celebrating Month of the Military Child throughout April.

April is designated as the Month of the Military Child because it is meant to show the important role military children play in the armed forces community, according to the Defense Link Web site. It’s a time to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and challenges they overcome.

“We think parents participating with their children in different events will show their support and appreciation of this month,” said Cassie McIntyre, the Air Station CDC director.

The month will kick off today with a parade at 9 a.m., to be held by the children, parents and teachers of the CDC, (weather permitting).

“This is the first time in the past three years we’ve had a parade to begin the month,” McIntyre said. “We are very excited about having the parade, because the parents and children had fun making it a success.”

Other events in store to celebrate the month will be a Single Marine and Sailor Program sponsored Easter Egg Hunt April 10, a breakfast-on-the-go April 17 and a spaghetti dinner for parents April 23, all scheduled to take place at the CDC.

“We are looking forward to an outstanding month,” said Loretta Gardner, a Month of the Military Child coordinator. “We are incorporating the civilian world with the military families, by taking some of the children’s artwork into local establishments and restaurants, to show the community what the military children are doing,” Gardner continued.

Parents were very generous with donating prizes for a lot of the events; the CDC thanks them for helping with the parade, Gardner added.
