MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. —

Marines aboard Quantico rushed to take the combat fitness test before March 31.

According to MARADMIN 521/08, “The goal is for all active duty and reserve Marines to perform an initial CFT prior to March 31. The sooner Marines participate in the initial CFT the better able they will be to meet or exceed standards once official scoring begins.”

“The commandant of the Marine Corps directed that a scored system for the CFT be implemented July 1,” said Brian McGuire, the physical readiness program analyst with Training and Education Command G-3.

“The CFT is an assessment of a Marines’ physical capacity in combat- related demands,” said McGuire.

In regards to the Physical Fitness Test, “The PFT is good for what it tests, but it does lack some specificity as it relates to combat related demands,” said McGuire

The CFT is currently pass or fail, and information collected from the initial CFT helped to create the scoring system.

“The Marine Corps War Fighting Lab had the lead in developing the CFT tables.”, said McGuire.

In the future, CFT scores will be included in fitness reports and determine cutting scores for promotion.

“The composite score conversion table is being developed by Manpower and Reserve Affairs,” said McGuire. “The composite score conversion table is still in development but will be released when the CFT scoring tables are released.”

It is essential that Marines be physically ready for the semi-annual physical fitness test, and now, with the combat fitness test, Marines can do more than just running, pull-ups and crunches.

“Having the CFT count towards promotion will ensure that Marines are incorporating combat-related physical activities in their physical fitness programs,” said McGuire. “Marines shouldn’t train solely for the test, but incorporating CFT-like training into PT will enhance a Marines’ physical capacity in a broader spectrum of physical skills.”
