RAYNHAM —

A street sign dedicated to James McGarry was installed Tuesday afternoon on the corner of Route 44 and Church Street — the street where McGarry lived with his family for much of his childhood.

McGarry was killed during the Vietnam War in 1969 while serving with the Marines.

The Fallen Heroes sign was unveiled during a ceremony at Town Hall last month in the presence of many family members.

McGarry worked as a journalist at the Taunton Daily Gazette, the New Bedford Standard Times and The Boston Globe before enlisting.

"He was a gifted journalist and he would have had a good career in the newspaper business," said McGarry's younger brother, John. "But he had to do his duty and he felt it was his turn to serve."

The street sign was the second honoring Raynham's casualties of war. In January, a sign was installed at the Four Corners intersection in memory of Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who was killed in action in Afghanistan June 21, 2006.
