Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron from Cherry Point adopted students from Graham A. Barden Elementary School at a ceremony Friday at the school.

The 900 squadron members were treated to patriotic songs and a cake party following the ceremony, which featured plenty of flag-waving students.

"The ultimate goal is to help the children develop and increase and strengthen our partnership with the community outside the gate," said Lt. Col. Glenn Vogel, commander of the squadron.

Vogel said squadron members would provide mentorship, guest speakers and special tutoring efforts at the school.

"About 100 to 150 of these children have a parent in the military, many serving on deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan," Vogel said.

Donna Bagley, school liaison officer for the air station, helped organize the adoption through the adopt a school program.

"This is the best part off my job, making these partnerships," she said. "These relationships are so key."

Students presented members of the squadron various picture scrapbooks that are to be sent to parents serving in the Navy and Marine Corps overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.
