Troops have burgers 'their way' on Fourth of July

Burger King has been feeding U.S. servicemembers for a long time.

On Friday it intends to feed them for free.

The fast-food giant rolled out its newest product earlier this week — the Great American Burger.

As a special promotion and to give military members a taste of home, active-duty servicemembers can try one for free on the Fourth of July.

The company is hoping to serve a free burger to more than 200,000 troops stationed overseas, said Rob Doughty, Burger King’s vice president for global corporate communications.

That includes cutomers at its restaurants in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, South Korea, mainland Japan, Okinawa, Japan, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Kosovo, Holland and Luxembourg.

The new burger is designed to look and taste like one fired up on the backyard grill, said Doughty.

“Since we launched it July 1, we thought, why not share it with the servicemen and women who can’t have the experience on July 4th?” Doughty said.

“July 4th is the biggest outdoor cooking day of the year. It’s a good opportunity to give servicemen and women the experience of the backyard grill.”

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service operates 184 Burger Kings worldwide. The two sides struck up a partnership in 1984.

“AAFES has had snack bars much longer, but we recognized in the mid-’80s that our customers wanted name-brand fast food,” said Maj. Mitch Edgar, an AAFES spokesman.

“Burger King became our most significant partner in that regard.”

Doughty said the new burger includes four slices of bacon, a bakery bun, burger patty, full-leaf of lettuce, tomato, onion, seasoned sauce and seasoned mustard. It will become a standard menu item.
