JACKSONVILLE -- During World War II, Coast Guard coxswains drove the bulk of the landing craft that put Marines ashore in the island-hopping campaign across the Pacific. In Vietnam, the Coast Guard patrolled rivers, often dropping off or picking up Marines in the dense jungle.
But for nearly 30 years, the missions for those two branches of the military haven't intersected often.
