Runners don briefs for colon cancer

Some of the 1,000 or so people who braved chilling rain in St. Louis for the "Undy 5000" ran only in shorts and sneakers to promote colon cancer awareness.

While others chose to pull on their briefs over warmer outerclothes, area Marine recruiter Mick "Gunny" Garza and his running companions -- a contingent of Marines and recruits -- wore only shorts and running shoes in keeping with the intent of the event.

The 5-kilometer run was one of seven races held throughout the United States Saturday to urge people to be screened for colon cancer, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday.

Sara Koeper and two friends were among many who ran with white men's briefs pulled over their running pants.

"There had to be three of us because they come three to a pack," Koeper said.

Debra Joshu ran to honor her husband Eric, who died of colon cancer seven years ago. Joshu shrugged off the chilling gusts of wind and steady rain saying those discomforts paled in comparison with having colon cancer.

"We're doing (this) to remind people they need to get tested," said Joshu.
