by Keith Shampine, Florida Green Racing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In what has already been a week filled with news interviews around his Port St. Lucie, Fla., home, Ryan Rust and Florida Green Racing will travel north to Charlotte, N.C., for an array of events that begins Friday morning with a Clear Channel radio interview to promote his family’s prospering Adopt-A-Hero and Adopt-A-Marine programs. Friday afternoon will see Rust travel to Tri-County (N.C.) Motor Speedway, where he’ll drive an Orion Motorsports-owned late model stock car in 2009, for the track’s annual Media Day and practice sessions.

The exciting weekend will culminate Saturday afternoon at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport where the Adopt-A-Hero and Adopt-A-Marine programs will donate a $5,000 check to the United Service Organizations of North Carolina (USO) on behalf of Rust, Florida Green Racing, RGS Labs, Fast Wax One, Top Secret Wax, DirecTV and Circle K.

The special event and presentation will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and members of the media are encouraged to attend. Media should call the USO of North Carolina office in Charlotte at 704-359-5581 24 hours in advance to attend. Media should call no later than 11 a.m. Friday.

The Adopt-A-Hero and Adopt-A-Marine programs work with 50,000 people in over two dozen countries. Over 30,000 care packages have been sent to military members overseas as a result of the programs’ efforts.

As a 12-year-old bandolero racer, Ryan recognized the opportunity to promote a program that sent care packages to overseas Marines through his racing efforts. With the help of his family, Ryan and his younger sister began contacting Marines and urged them to sign up to be “adopted.” Ryan and his family promoted the program using his race car and word-of-mouth as advertising tools and began finding many Americans interested in adopting a Marine. The program has since evolved into all branches of the military – Adopt-A-Hero – and gained the support of the USO of North Carolina late last year.

Ryan Rust is a 16-year-old racer from Port St. Lucie, Fla., who races late models full time in North Carolina. Rust will drive an Orion Motorsports-owned late model at Tri-County this season.

Rust is a member of the Team Full Throttle NASCAR Driver Development Program and is represented by Driver Development Services, Inc., Charlotte, N.C. His marketing partners are Florida Green Environmental Services and Adopt a Marine.
